This charming collection of children's folk songs was intended to teach kids to appreciate nature, particularly natural creatures that are often regarded by adults with fear and loathing. The songs, which are written by Patty Zeitlin and Marcia Berman and performed by Berman and Patty and David Zeitlin, extol the virtues of spiders, lizards, snakes, bees, worms -- virtually every critter you'd expect to find on a list of America's Least Wanted. The record was marketed to elementary school teachers and includes an 18-page "Teacher's Guide" that outlines the artists' agenda ("killing some living creatures thoughtlessly and unnecessarily is so much a part of our lives, we just accept it without question") and makes suggestions for potential lessons that might be inspired by the songs. For example, "The Little Bird is Dead" ought to be useful for parents and teachers in helping children to discuss ideas and bring up any questions they might have about death." The songs are simple and pretty, containing memorable melodies and attractive acoustic guitar and harmonica arrangements. Spin, Spider, Spin was released in 1974 and seems rooted in environmentally concerned, folk music loving hippie culture. But it doesn't seem dated and should carry considerable appeal for parents looking for an alternative to Pokemon and Disney products. ~ Evan Cater., All Music Guide
